Reminiscent of a 50’s California beach town, Folly has a laid back artist and beach bum vibe. Home to such seasonal events as Follypalooza, the Sea and Sand Festival, and Folly Gras, the community rejoices in frequent street events and festivals throughout the year. Folly Pier is a popular place to fish, take a walk, or watch the waves, and is also the location of Pier 101- one of the best places to have an ocean side cocktail and take in live music. Aptly named Center Street is home to a myriad of dining and drinking establishments, and no visit to Folly would be complete without a visit to Berts Market, where the motto is “We may doze, but we never close.”
One of the original Charleston Beach towns, and one with plenty of local flavor. This is definitely a vacation themed area- which the island does boast of a significant local population, beachfront condos, one hotel, and hundreds of vacation rentals provide tourists with a spot to relaxafter a day at the beach. The Folly Pier is a popular photo spot and summertime stroll. Surfers can takein local waves around this pier or at The Washout, and when one gets hungry or thirsty, there are manybars and restaurants in the area, with a high concentration on Center Street. As a day visitor, parking canbe tricky, but Folly Beach County Park does offer ample parking for a fee. Folly Beach is also the locationwhere famed composer George Gershwin worked to bring the musical Porgy and Bess to life.
